Circles of Support
In 2012, Resourcing Families will be running workshops about circles of support in a range of locations. We will also be running information sessions and webinars. Times and locations for these events will be posted on the website, when they become available.

Gaining control and acting with vision - presented Dr Michael Kendrick - 30 August 2010
Dr Michael Kendrick encouraged families to consider and assert their own natural authority, as they work towards a vision of "the good life" with and for their family member.
A vision bigger than your vision - presented by Dr Paula Kluth - 5 March 2011
Dr Paula Kluth shared the importance of having a vision in goal setting an in bringing others on the journey.
Creating inclusive lives...sharing the Canadian experience - presented by families, advocates and allies from Canada - 18 August 2011
Canada has been using self directed funding to offer innovative and creative options for people with disability and their families for many years. Canadian families, allies and advocates shared knowledge gained from years of experience creating valued and inclusive lives for people with disability.
Canadian study tour - August 2011
Australian families had the opportunity to meet with Candian families to share stories and ideas in Grafton, Bathurst, Newcastle, Nowra and Sydney.
Positive directions for lives of meaning and fulfillment - September 2011
Many families have said that they would like their son or daughter with disability to enjoy the same good, ordinary opportunities as their other children but that they find this hard to achieve.
This new workshop considers why this is so and explores strategies for helping a person with disability to have a good life as part of their community.
Relationships: from being there to belonging - presented by Janet Klees - 6 October 2011
Janet helped families to move beyond the theory and get ideas and strategies for enriching the life of a person with developmental disability through relationships.
Social Workers in Disability - Tools and Trends Conference
Information was provided to social workers about the role of Resourcing Families in supporting people with disabilities and their families to have a good life. A Mentor with the Resourcing Families initiative shared her experiences around the importance of having a vision for the future and her conscious strategies for supporting her daughter to be a valued member of her community.
Early Childhood Intervention Conference
Resourcing Families presented a paper at the conference – Making a difference; the importance of embracing the ordinary in encouraging lives of meaning and fulfillment. A Mentor with the Resourcing Families initiative talked about how embracing ordinary opportunities for her son with significant support needs – rather than disability specific ones – has resulted in him being known, building his skills and gaining a true sense of identity.
Harness the possibilities for young people with disabilities – information session across NSW - ongoing
Resourcing Families conducted information sessions for families and interested others about: the Resourcing Families initiative; key changes to the way people with disability will be supported in NSW; some of the key themes including having a vision, circles of support and valued social roles.
Some of the places that Resourcing Families presented information sessions include: Epping, Newcastle, Blackett, Blacktown, North Sydney, Kirrawee, Gladesville, Liverpool, Rosehill, Campbelltown, Eastwood, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Bega, Batemans Bay, Nowra, Wollongong, Condobolin, Parkes, Orange, Springwood, Warren, Dubbo, Mudgee, Queanbeyan.
These information sessions were attended by families, advocates, allies and professionals. Some sessions were conducted for specific groups – such as MyTime or interagency meetings, others were broadly promoted.
An information session for families who speak Vietnamese as a first language was presented with translation.
Circles of support information session
An information session took place for a circle of support that has started in small town near the Victorian border.
Whole of Life Expo – Queanbeyan – 1 September
Resourcing Families hosted an information stall and conducted information sessions for families and interested others.
